Stages Cycling was the first company to develop a left side crank arm power meter and it continues to lead the category with lightweight, affordable and easy-to-use options. Now in their third generation, Stages power meters are built exclusively for Shimano cranksets. Riders can choose from left side, right side and dual-sided configurations. With 200 hours of battery life, reliable ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity and solid accuracy, Stages remains a top choice for cyclists who want simple and dependable power data with minimal weight and effort.
Additional Stages Power Meter Info:
Installing a Stages left crank arm is quick and easy. You just remove your existing crank arm and replace it with the Stages version, which typically takes less than five minutes. If you’re installing a dual-sided crankset, you’ll need to replace the entire Shimano crankset. While this takes a bit more time, it’s still straightforward as long as your frame and bottom bracket are compatible. Each sensor adds just 20 grams, or 40 grams total for a dual-sided setup. As a result, Stages remains one of the lightest power meter options on the market.
Stages measures power using a strain gauge located inside the crank arm. Left side models calculate total power by doubling the left leg’s output. For most riders without a large left/right imbalance, this method is accurate. On the other hand, dual-sided models like the Ultegra R8100 and DURA-ACE 9200 measure power from each leg independently, giving you more detailed insights. These power meters also record cadence using a built-in accelerometer. They transmit data via both ANT+ and Bluetooth, so you can easily pair them with head units, smartphones or training apps like Zwift.
All models run on a CR2032 battery, which provides about 200 hours of runtime. The battery is inexpensive and easy to replace. In terms of accuracy, Stages meters are rated to within ±1.5%, which puts them on par with most other options. The product includes a one-year warranty that covers defects in materials and manufacturing.
