Thanks for the great question! Shimano’s transitioned to Hollowtech II in the mid-2000s. These cranksets use a small preload cap on the left crank arm and this tool is used to remove and install it. If you see two small pinch bolts your left crank arm, it’s a Hollowtech II system and you'll need this tool.
