Key Features of the Garmin Edge 550 Bike Computer
- Brighter and Larger Screen: Garmin increased the size of the screen to 2.7″ and massively boosted brightness when compared to the previous version, improving readability under bright sun.
- Live Weather Feature: The Garmin Edge 550 can show live weather including wind direction and rain radar, handy for longer rides and segment hunting.
- Updated GroupRide Connectivity: In-ride messaging and live data from other members in your ride group help you stay with the pack.
- Enhanced Safety: See reported road hazards from fellow riders, send crash alerts automatically to emergency services and share your live location with loved ones.
- Gear Ratio Analysis: Post ride data on what gears were used the most when connected to electronic drivetrains. This is useful for dialing in which chainrings or cassettes match your riding needs.
- Improved MTB Tracking: Garmin have upgraded the GPS frequency to 5 Hz when using the new Enduro and Downhill ride profiles. This means each twist and turn of the trail is captured with accuracy.
Compatibility
The Edge 550 connects via ANT+, Bluetooth Smart, and WiFi. It pairs seamlessly with smartphones, power meters, select electronic shifting systems, Garmin Varia radar sensors, select e-bikes, heart rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors. The Edge 550 is also compatible with the Garmin Charge Power Pack battery.
Considerations
The new display is incredibly bright, but it comes at the cost of shorter battery life. Lowering brightness helps extend run time, but all-day riders may notice the tradeoff. Some features such as the live weather and group ride messaging need a smartphone with cellular connected, so these features won’t be as useful to those in areas without cell service. The Edge 550 is also slightly heavier than the previous model.
