About the PowerTap P1S Pedals

The PowerTap P1S Pedals are arguably the most advanced, and affordable, pedal-based power meter ever developed. The P1S is a single-sided version of the popular P1 dual-sided pedal-based power meter. The PowerTap P1S Pedals feature a left pedal with a power sensor and right pedal without a sensor. Like other left-only power meters, the left pedal doubles the value of the single side to get total power. The PowerTap P1S Pedals offer all of the same benefits of the original P1 – accurate, reliable, easy to install, pedal-based convenience, integrated design, super durable, ANT+ and Bluetooth SMART – however are more affordable at only $599.99. In addition, you can upgrade your P1S Pedals at any time to a dual-sided power meter simply by purchasing an upgrade pedal.

The P1S Pedals use a forged aluminum pedal body and are compatible with 3-bolt Keo-style cleats. The P1S Pedals weigh 199 grams (left pedal), uses a single AAA battery and provides 60 hours battery life.

PowerTap P1S Pedal Options

  • You can purchase either the dual-sided PowerTap P1 Pedal or the singled-sided version you are viewing here.

Compatibility

  • The PowerTap P1S Pedals use cleats that are very similar to – but not exactly the same as – LOOK Keo cleats. LOOK Keo cleats will work, but the engagement within the pedal isn’t perfect. So for best results, you should use the cleats that come with your PowerTap P1S Pedals
  • Non-round rings are supported perfectly with the P1S Pedals

In the Box

  • Left PowerTap P1S Pedal with sensor
  • Right PowerTap P1S Pedal without sensor
  • A set of cleats (red, 6 degree float) and hardware
  • One AAA lithium battery
  • Quick Start Guide

I chose PowerTap to easily switch between bikes which I’ve done several times now. They haven’t let me down. Easy to switch. Rugged. I’m getting great actionable data from them. Wish they were lighter but I’d make the same choice again. Power Meter City was fast & professional. Recommended.

This is an update of my review (see above), since some of the issues that I mentioned have been resolved.

First, there’s a firmware update (30.028, released July 17, 2017) that removes the “right pedal missing” message.

Second, the firmware can be installed via the VirtualTraining app, which is supported on Android as well as iPhone. (The app also shows the battery charge level, although I’m not sure this value can be trusted, since it always seems to be 100%.)

Third, I found some rechargeable lithium batteries on Amazon that recharge via a micro-USB port on the side of the battery. Very slick. I’ve only used them for one ride so far, so can’t say anything about longevity, but it seems like a good solution. Powertap should consider distributing batteries like this in future with the pedals.

Since these issues have been resolved, I’m raising my rating from four to five stars. Thanks!

Hi James. Thanks for the review! Yes the P1S is one of the more popular pedals due to their integrated design, accuracy and features. Glad you got things figured out with the firmware update and the batteries. Thanks again and let us know if there is anything else we can do!

These pedals have been great. In addition to tracking my increases in power, they have basically made it possible to turn any old spin bike that will accept real pedals (like my old Lemond) into a power trainer. Still have to adjust the resistance manually, but I can ride with anyone on Zwift and other online services. So I swap them from my road bike to the spin bike in the winter. I’ve paired mine with a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt head unit and that has been very satisfactory because I can easily calibrate them at the beginning of any ride right from the head unit. I can also sent the crank length without having to switch to a different app. Very useful, very easy to use. They get better with every firmware update. -Jon
