PowerPod V5 Power Meter with PowerStroke Upgrade

The PowerPod V5 Power Meter with PowerStroke Upgrade isn’t your ordinary power meter. Unlike more traditional power meters that attach to your drivetrain (crank, crank arm or hubs) or pedals and measure your power using strain gauges, the PowerPod power meter attaches to your handlebars and measures your power through wind measurement. More specifically, the PowerPod uses an accelerometer, a wind pressure sensor, an elevation sensor and a speed sensor – all to measure your power.

NOTE: Requires ANT+ speed or speed/cadence sensor.

Key Product Details

Compatibility:

This power meter mounts to 31.8 mm handlebars (or 22 mm if used with the TT mount), and therefore works with just about any bike. This includes road, track, CX and MTB. See Compatibility tab for more information.

What’s New with PowerPod V5!

The new V5 has the following improvements:

  • A new 24-bit wind sensor which provides better and higher resolution wind measurements
  • A new 24-bit barometric pressure sensor which provides more accurate elevation measurement
  • New Firmware 9 which uses 24-bit data to deliver better power measurement accuracy
  • New Velocomp app for iOS/Android lets you set up as many as four bikes directly from your smartphone
  • The new app also includes a bike computer screen which displays current power, average power, speed, calories, distance, cadence, and also provides a graphical display of your power zone as a percentage of your FTP

About PowerStroke:

This version comes with PowerStroke which is an upgraded software package that allows you to analyze your performance in great detail. You can see your entire pedal stroke including left vs. right leg power and more. For example, PowerStroke can analyze which areas of the pedal stroke your power comes from, provide measurement of front-to-back, side-to-side, and left/right wobble motion of the bicycle and determine things such as Wasted Watts, Wasted Motion, and Wasted Time caused by wobbling. PowerStroke records data at 16 times per second and at each 10 degrees of a pedal stroke.

Power Measurement:

The PowerPod measures opposing forces, so it’s able to measure the power that is generated from both legs (rider’s total power).

Key Features:

Affordable, works with any bike, can be moved between bikes, measures a rider’s total power, upgraded software package, 15 hours of battery life, rechargeable battery, ANT+ and Bluetooth compatibility. See Specs tab for more information.

Advice From Our Staff:

The PowerPod is a unique power meter. Unlike other power meters that mount to the drivetrain and measure your direct power, the PowerPod measures your power by wind resistance. This has some pros and cons. It’s affordable, it will mount to any bike and you can move it between bikes. However, in some cases, it won’t be as accurate. In addition, it can take more work to get it set-up and configured properly. So, if you’re looking for an affordable power meter that will give you a nice approximation of your power (and is sometimes very accurate actually) and are willing to spend some time getting it set-up, then it might be a great option for you. You can read the many positive reviews on the Reviews tab. However, if accuracy is very important to you and/or you want a power meter that is easier to use, we might suggest a different option.

Other Versions to Consider

PowerPod: We also sell the Velocomp PowerPod V5 Power Meter. It costs a bit less, but doesn’t offer some of the features found in this upgraded PowerStroke unit.

Compatibility

This power meter mounts to 31.8 mm handlebars (or 22 mm if used with the TT mount), and therefore works with just about any bike. This includes road, track, CX and MTB.

    Update to my prior review:

Before reviewing the Power pod, a quick review of Power Meter City, this was my first purchase with this company and I am in Canada so there is always hesitation before purchasing online and across borders. My experience with PMC was very good, they updated me on my order during the initial handling period and the delivery was very fast and without event. My initial questions (emails) with respect to setup were answered almost immediately and they followed up with me to ensure my success with the product. I highly recommend Power Meter City as a vendor.
I have now had my unit (PowerPod V4 with Powerstroke) installed on the bike for a few weeks and have had the opportunity to play with it. I have no experience with strain gauge power meters and I am an older rider with no aspirations of becoming Pro.. but I am technically inclined and have a good understanding of cycling. I am comparing the power values with my smart trainer (Rouvy/Zwift) and all I can really say is that it feels comparable. The average power read while riding outdoors is almost identical to what Strava “suggests” that my average power was. For me, this is what I am most interested in, a live indication of my power output.
My complaints with the product is that the documentation for tweaking almost doesn’t exist, there is some online information on the PMC website and on the Velocom website, but not a clean document, the calibration card doesn’t seem to be fully compatible with this version of software in the unit. Most of the information on the web is about older versions of the Power Pod, and most of my useful information was directly from the Velocom forums, reading what other users have experienced. As most the information available is about the Power Pod V3, anything I read there I had to test whether it was applicable to my unit.
But as I get more experienced with my unit, I am getting happier with it.. the numbers are consistent which is most important to me. Another important point is that I am primarily a road cyclist on asphalt, I have noted that the unit seems to be off if you start the ride on asphalt and ride on to a gravel road, the section on the gravel seems to be low… I believe because the rolling resistance is much greater. I am still playing with this, but it maybe a consideration if you are a mountain bike / gravel bike rider that variability in terrain may affect your numbers. I remember reading one of the forum threads which suggested that the device may change profiles while in a ride.. now I just have to rediscover that thread.
I am happy with this purchase, it is considerably easier to install on a bike and cheaper than most power meters, the data seems consistent and the software (Issac) provides a lot of numbers to explore.
It has almost seamless compatibility with my Garmin 530 computer. It is important to note is that I am technically inclined and thus enjoy the challenge of setting up/tweaking the device with limited input, but right out of the box, it had fairly close numbers.

Thanks for the follow-up review Jeff – really appreciate it. We hope you will continue to enjoy them and please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with! Ride safe!

I received my PowerPod v4 a few days ago, so I can not comment yet on whether the device is finicky. It did take me a couple hours to figure out how to pair and calibrate with my Garmin 530, but once the right lights were blinking it was easy. PMC has many online documents as to how to configure and I found that very helpful. I had emailed PMC support a couple times with respect to the order and they replied within an hour (during normal working hours). They also used pretty advanced technology to send me a video link with comments in respect to the order, pretty cool.. They have also reached out to me to ensure my success with the device. I am extremely happy with my purchasing experience with them, but as I mentioned it is too soon to say just how good the actual device is… but for me it is the only reasonably priced device on the market, and I am fairly technically inclined so I am very excited to play with this device and get all the new data on my rides.

Hi there, thank you for this – glad you finally have your PowerPod v4. We hope you will enjoy them on your rides. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do!

The money you save by buying this power meter will be wasted in the time that you spend trying to get it to work properly. It is a very finicky device that requires constant recalibration, resetting, tweeking on your computer, and good luck getting it to work well on two different bikes. Cycling is a time consuming enough sport, I certainly don’t need to spend 1-2 hours extra per week babysitting bike electronics.

After a few month survey for power meter suitable for my need, at last i found PMC and purchasing Powerpod V3 Power Meter with powerstroke upgrade. International delivery and successfully received by yesterday in good condition by DHL express. International delivery may be delayed because of pandemic covid19 around the world. Thanks PMC to give link for instructions and just successfully installed and fully function as per advertised. Powerpod V3 Power Meter save more cost compared to force power meter due to Powerpod V3 can easily change to another. Thanks PMC. Customer from Malaysia.

The Pod is exactly what I needed for my bikes. At first, the low cost and alternate measurement technology, gave me pause. After watching many you tube review videos, and with guidance from PMC, I decided to take a chance on this power meter. It was my only realistic choice because I refuse to give up speed play pedals or my hot wheels (disc). The cranks won’t move easily between 3 bikes. I need data consistency rather than accuracy to an external reference value. Pleasant surprise. The pod prints watts that are very close to my previous numbers using different equipment. The install and pairing were easy after I discovered the velocomp you tube video titled calibration ride. Activation is quick. When I want to ride, I spin the crank to wake it up … and I’m gone. It plays well with my Garmin FR 920 XT which I use for a bike computer. Have yet to try the PowerStroke or adding additional bike profiles. I expect no problems. Pod should work on my indoor trainer as well. What more could one want! PMC helped me select the correct options. I have everything I need and nothing excessive. The PMC people can guide one to the optimum meter. The pod is a perfect fit for me.
