SRAM makes three similar Force cranksets. While they both feature carbon fiber construction, their interface and spindles differ. Here is how they compare:
Force D2
The SRAM Force D2 Crankset is the company’s latest version of Force cranks. They feature a carbon fiber lay-up with a high-gloss grey finish.
- Spindle: SRAM DUB
- Interface: 8-bolt
- Chainring configuration: 1x or 2x
- Spindle lengths: Regular or wide
Force D1
The previous version of Force cranks was called the Force D1. Unliked the D2, this version comes in a GXP version.
- Spindle: SRAM DUB and GXP
- Interface: 8-bolt
- Chainring configuration: 1x or 2x
- Spindle lengths: Regular or wide
Force 1
SRAM also sells the Force 1 crankset, which we also expect them to discontinue at some point.
- Spindle: BB30 or GXP
- Interface: 3-bolt
- Chainring configuration: 1x
- Spindle lengths: Regular
I think this conversation is misleading. Please correct me if i am wrong. The Sram Force D2 double chainring power meter is integrated with the chainrings (like the D1 RED double crankset). The Force D1 power meter is spider-based which means you can swap the chainrings. If you want to change the chainrings on the a Force D2 Power meter, you have to purchase a completely new power meter/chainring unit and swap your crank arms?
Hi Brad and thanks for the interest.
Sorry if there was any confusion here. The D plus number designations are just SRAM’s internal series numbers. The 107 BCD power meter spider that existed during the D1 iteration and still continues, is a meter you can change chainrings on separately. This spider will mount using the same 8 bolt pattern to both D1 and D2 cranksets (and Red D1, and E1). The power meter spider/chainring kits come in both a 1X and 2X non-modular version where the power meter and chainring or chainrings are manufactured as a single unit.
Please let me know if you have any questions,
Thanks,
Could you comment on this scenario based question for clarity? I am building up a bike, I have a 107 BCD Power meter from an old bike setup. Can I reuse that PM with either SRAM Force D2 or SRAM Red D1 full cranksets purchased without a PM?
Hi Madelyn,
Yes. The 107 BCD power meter spider, the Force D2 and the Red D1 all share the 8 t20 torx bolt mounting interface. The power meter spider is not designed to mount to the aluminum Rival crankset, but will fit just fine on any of the 8 bolt SRAM AXS carbon cranksets manufactured after the change to the Dub standard in 2019.
Please use 4 nm of torque in a star pattern when mounting the spider to the crankset.
Thanks,
Isn’t Force D2 interface direct mount? D1 you can piece two chainrings and a power meter spider together but not D2.
Hi Charlie and thanks for the question.
The Force D2 crankset only differs from the Force D1 in colorway. The D2 only comes in a Dub spindle where the D1 came in both Dub and GXP. Otherwise identical. Both cranksets have the same 8 bolt mount that will accept a Direct Mount ring, a spider with removeable rings, or the one-piece 2X chainring kit.
Thanks,
I’m a bit confused with different opinions from different bike shops. Is my D1 powermeter spider compatible with the D2 chain rings? Meaning if i buy D2 chain rings, i can use back my existing powermeter spider?
Hi Glen and thanks for the question.
D1 and D2 are just SRAM’s names for their model years and changes. This can be very confusing and a little complex case to case. I am very happy to talk about what you have an what will work. Please give me a call M-F 9-5 Eastern Time 949 535-3742.
